Saratoga 150 marks Saratoga Springs’ community celebration of 150 years of horse racing

With a renowned history of horse racing, the City of Saratoga Springs will celebrate the 150th Anniversary of Saratoga Race Course in May 2013. City dignitaries and sponsors are in the process of planning a six-month long festival for Saratoga residents and tourists alike, called Saratoga 150.

Probably the most anticipated time of the year here in Upstate New York is track season. For 40 days out of the summer, folks from across the country flock to Saratoga Springs for six weeks of fun, horse racing, and gambling at the Saratoga Race Course. Let’s face it—nothing gets your blood flowing like the thrill of watching the world’s best thoroughbreds race down the final stretch.

Deemed as one of the “Top 10 Sporting Venues In The World” by Sports Illustrated, the Saratoga Race Course is the oldest and one of the most beloved horse racing tracks in the country. Founded in 1863, Saratoga Race Course is often referred to as the Graveyard of Champions, as it is notorious for challenging even the best of thoroughbreds. Hall of Famers like Man o’ War, Gallant Fox, and Secretariat have all suffered major upsets here at Saratoga.

Sponsors include The Adirondack Trust Company, DeCrescente Distributing Company, John Hendrickson and Marylou Whitney, The New York Racing Association, Ron and Michele Riggi, Saratoga Casino and Raceway, Skidmore College, and Stewarts Shops, all of which have contributed an initial $25,000 to the event. Local nonprofits are getting in on the act as well. To date, more than 60 Saratoga area nonprofits have offered their support to the festival. There are still sponsorship opportunities for those who wish to participate.

Additionally, anyone who wishes to be “Friends” of Saratoga 150 can purchase a special Win, Place, or Show medallion through the event’s website at www.saratoga150.com for $15. You can also purchase the medallions at any Adirondack Trust Company bank location.

The celebration will begin on May 26, 2013, at the Saratoga Spa State Park, where event goers can enjoy a variety of music, storytellers, various contests and of course, a very special Saratoga 150 fireworks display.

We look forward to seeing you there!
